Choco Suisse Import, Noir 74%

The origins of Choco Suisse Import Noir are elusive. Despite obvious Swiss motifs in the package design, a thorough read of the wrapper reveals only the name of a French-based import company (probably not a manufacturer). Choco Suisse is possibly a private label, in which case it might belong to the manufacturer Chocolat Bernrain -- but even that is pure speculation. It is not even clear whether the chocolate is made in Switzerland, although the packaging is clearly seeking a direct assocation with the Swiss chocolate tradition. It is as if the maker is seeking to conceal his identity -- a gambit which might work with the highest end luxury products, where mysteriousness is associated with exclusiveness, but cannot be a good thing with mass market products such as this chocolate bar.

One would hope that such a secretive chocolate would also conceal some interesting and unusual tastes, but, alas, Choco Suisse is hardly an exotic beauty. The taste is bitter, strong and not at all subtle. Any pretentions to chocolate stardom are burned away in a dry, grainy aftertaste. It would probably make an excellent baking chocolate, but is not a chocolate for straight out-of-the-wrapper-into-your-mouth consumption.
