Frey, Venezuela (60% cocao)
In Switzerland, the Frey brand is nearly synonymous with the very word chocolate. At one time Chocolate Frey was an independent producer, but the company has long since merged into the giant Swiss retailer Migros. Migros kept the Frey name alive and, today, Frey chocolate is consumed in greater quantities than any other brand in Switzerland.
Frey Venezuela is a country of origin bar and, upon first bite, a bit shy to reveal its taste. After a few contemplative moments of uncertainty, the chocolate finally opens up and delivers a mild woody and fruity taste, with hints of nuts in the background. The flavor is by no means intense and you may be left wondering whether you had actually eaten anything, as the aftertaste is very slight. Frey Venezuela is not an upscale bar and it is inevitable that compromises had to be made with the ingredients, such as using aroma/vanillin instead of real vanilla. Nonetheless, Frey has achieved a inexpensive, edible bar which can be easily consumed in irresponsibly large quantities.
