Suchard, Sensations Noir (70% cacao)
At one time Suchard dominated the Swiss chocolate industry, producing over half of all Swiss chocolate, and the company's founder, Philippe Suchard, was a leading innovator in the chocolate industry. Today, the Suchard name is still closely associated with Swiss quality and the brand's owner, Kraft Foods, is quick to link the name with the "175 years of Swiss chocolate tradition". Suchard Sensations, the brand's new line of premium dark chocolates, is nonetheless not very Swiss. As the fine print on the wrapper reveals, the chocolate is produced in Belgium and exported back to Switzerland.
Despite it status as a non-resident of Switzerland, Suchard Sensations Noir is a pretty good chocolate. In fact, its light, somewhat buttery and cremy texture, allows for consumption in copious amounts. For a 70% chocolate, Suchard Noir is on the sweet side and tastes more like a 50% chocolate. With no special flavours and overtones, the chocolate is one-dimensional, however, there is something to be said for its simplicity. A recommended chocolate for those who are a bit uncertain of dark chocolate.
