Surviving on chocolate

swissarmy_36.gifSwiss Army Chocolate claims to be made for survival situations, although its hard to imagine what in particular makes this bar so appropriate for extreme moments, unless your life somehow depends on a massive, immediate dosage of sugar and cocao butter. There has been mention of specially concocted chocolate which is heat-resistant up to 60 degrees Celsius (140 degrees Fahrenheit) and therefore suited for steamy jungle warfare and scorching desert action, but Swiss Army Chocolate is very much meltable and not even a suitable candidate for the lesser heat-resistant classification of "melts in your mouth, not in your hands". So, even getting that life-saving injection of sugar will be futile when your shaking, battle-scarred hands rip open the wrapper to uncover a unedible, half-melted blob.

In all fairness, Swiss Army Chocolate is actually a delicious treat, especially for sweet-toothed chocolate lovers. While the dark chocolate version unfortunately remains elusive to find, we did manage to secure a milk chocolate version, which combines skimmed milk with a respectable 36% cocao solids and a sumptuous mix of cornflakes and guarana extracts. This chocolate's nom de guerre is simply misleading, as there is not a hint of boot camp ruggedness nor militaristic functionality in this chocolate. In fact, the Swiss Army Chocolate would be perfect for as breakfast bar in a pinch or a mid-day snack in the office. As the sugar starts to overload your senses, one starts to imagine the officers sitting back and enjoying this little delicacy in the comfort of HQ while the troops slog it out in the trenches.
